SUCCESS STORY- SONI

Soni’s daily study group with students from Prerna Girls School

Soni, 17 years old, is a student of Prerna Girls School. Her father is a daily-wage earner, and the family was already experiencing considerable financial strain even before COVID-19 struck. “The pandemic has added to all the problems we were facing,” she says, “Suddenly, our source of income was gone and we were left with nothing. We got help from our school and also the government community kitchen. So we were able to feed ourselves. No one thought the lockdown would continue for so long. I am a student of class 11th. When my classes started, I was living in fear that I will not be able to continue my education. Neither could my siblings. We had no books, no phone to access study materials, and financial pressure to sustain ourselves.”

When Soni learned she was chosen to be a Digital Saathi, she felt a huge sense of relief. “Once the strict lockdown ended, the school provided us with smartphones, which helped me and the girls living nearby. We get our lessons daily, and are able to get important information as well. I also report to my teachers about the progress of the girls studying with me.”
