SUCCESS STORY - ZUBAIDA ANSARI

Defied attempts of child marriage to become independent

A first sight Zubaida comes across as a sweet, hardworking and honest girl who has never seen the ills of life but when you get to know her better your respect for her increases manyfolds.

Zubaida’s was only 14 years old when her mother approached the Principal of Prerna Girls School for a loan of Rs 10,000 during a parent teacher meeting. She wanted the loan for Zubaida’s marriage. The rationale behind the marriage was that when Zubaida gets married to her maternal uncle’s son, the family would get money in return and their financial condition would improve.

The principal of the Prerna Girls School realized that the family was in a dire financial condition, which was the motivation for the marriage. After trying for about a month, the principal was able to get Zubaida and her a mother a job which enabled them to support their family. As a result, aiding them financially dissuaded the family from marrying who is now 22 years old and has completed a bachelor's degree in arts from Karamat Degree College.

She is working at the Digital Study Hall, where she solely manages the Mona Foundation Scholarships for girls from destitute families in remote areas of Uttar Pradesh. The scholarship currently ensures that 400 girls remain in school after they finish government aided residential schooling which is only till class 8.

Zubaida was lucky that she had Prerna Girls School and was given an opportunity that transformed her life. Many girls like Zubaida are not as lucky, help us reach out to those girls.
